I have worked at Rio Grande Food Project for over 8 years now and have seen fluctuations in food prices at the grocery store and in the food stream at our pantry. I witnessed the increased demand for food during the covid pandemic. Now I am witnessing the effects of the federal government increasing work and administrative requirements to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP benefits) to such a degree that nationwide, roughly 5 million Americans have now lost access to this critical food access program. Those now facing increased food insecurity and the physical effects of hunger, include more than 1.5 million children, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

SNAP is the federal safety net to keep people out of food pantry lines. For every 1 meal provided by a local food pantry, SNAP provides NINE. These federal cuts have created a gap that food banks and pantries simply cannot fill.

This increased financial burden, coupled with increased costs at grocery stores, will cause even more people to struggle with tough budget choices; choosing between paying rent, the mortgage, utility bills, or medical prescriptions...and buying food. In these stressful situations, parents skip meals to ensure their kids eat, hungry children can't focus on school and learn, and seniors suffer in silence.

Join me in supporting real change. Let’s be the good in the world and make a difference. Help Rio Grande Food Project continue to provide free groceries to over 1,300 children, families, and seniors every week.

In addition to weekly food staples, RGFP's Community Hub offers utility bill assistance, SNAP enrollment, tax help, financial literacy education, cooking & nutrition classes, employment assistance referrals, and more partner services to maximize household incomes and create long-term food stability - one family, one household, one neighbor at a time.

Thank you for considering donating to help people access enough quality food to live healthy lives while accessing additional assistance and services to achieve long-term food security.

Much love,

Kathi
